The Subdivision Lab

Every beat has a halfway point. That halfway point is the “and.” Learning to say it out loud — one and two and three and four and — is how you stop guessing where notes land and start knowing.

01 · Hear the grid

Beats are the floor. Ands are the steps between.

Press play. The red squares are the beats you count 1 2 3 4. The gold squares are the ands — exactly halfway between. Say every word out loud as it lights up.

In 1 2 3 4 mode, the click only plays the beats — but keep saying the ands in the silent gaps. That silence is the muscle you’re building.

02 · Tap the and

Catch the offbeat.

The click plays only the beats. Your job: tap right on the and — the exact middle between two clicks. The pad turns gold when an “and” is due.

03 · Count it alone

No click. Just you and the grid.

The bar of light sweeps across at your tempo. Count one and two and three and four and out loud and watch if you stay locked to it. This is exactly the grid you’re counting in Thunder.

Get it steady here at 60. Then nudge it up toward 80–83 — Thunder’s real speed.
