State & Motion is Ted Sablay’s second solo album — ten songs, thirty-eight minutes, written on the road and finished at home. It’s about the weight capable people carry without being asked, and the life waiting on the other side of it.
Rooted in the American rock songbook, from Jackson Browne to Petty to the War on Drugs. Recorded, mixed, and sequenced to be heard front to back. No filler, no drift, a record that goes somewhere and lands.
Heartland rock is usually written from the outside in — the feeling arrives by implication, through whatever the camera is pointed at. This record inverts it. The drama is psychological. “I knew the price and bought it anyway” isn’t a scene, it’s an admission.
Pete Thomas, four decades behind Elvis Costello & the Attractions, drums across the record. Whynot Jansveld of The Wallflowers plays bass. The guitars weave rather than stack — rhythm doing melodic work, nobody soloing over anybody.
Every song was written to survive being played alone on an acoustic guitar. That was the test. Nothing here needs the production to work.
Sablay has toured as a guitarist with The Killers since 2006 and has been the band’s Musical Director since 2022. These songs were written across the four years since his 2022 solo debut, You’ll Be Back Here Soon.
