Ted Sablay
For nearly twenty years, Ted Sablay has played guitar and keyboards for The Killers on tour, and since 2022 he has been musical director for the band’s live shows. He came up in the Las Vegas scene of the ’90s and teaches songwriting to students around the world.
State & Motion is his second solo album, following 2022’s You’ll Be Back Here Soon. It took four years. Sablay is the youngest of six; his father is a physician who came to the U.S. from the Philippines, and his mother was a nurse. “So I was raised to be useful, and I got good at it,” he says. “Most of this record is me working out what I’m worth on a day when I’m not useful to anyone.”
He made one rule: every song had to hold up with one guy and an acoustic guitar. The band behind it is Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello & the Attractions) on drums and Whynot Jansveld (The Wallflowers) on bass.
